Chapter 9

As Mary made her way back to the house, she wondered what exactly Calvin meant when he said he had handled it. She shivered as she imagined what he might have done. Everyone seemed to be so tense and argumentative. She guessed the murder had stressed them out.

As Mary stepped back into the house, she spotted Suzie at the front desk.

“Don’t worry, they’re gone.” Suzie wiped her palms as she shook her head. “Glad to be rid of them, too. They were just too angry.”

“After what I just heard, I think we should be worried about Calvin and Jen.” Mary recounted the conversation she’d overheard.

“So, Nellie threatened to ruin them.” Suzie crossed her arms. “That sounds like a good motive to me. You’re right.”

“Am I?” Mary sighed as she looked toward the front door. “After what happened with Heidi and Lou I’m not so sure. I did jump to conclusions with them.”

“All you did was interpret the information you had and thought it might be a clue. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Suzie picked up her phone. “Someone committed murder in our home, we can’t just assume that everyone here is innocent. I’ll pass the information on to Jason and see what he thinks about it.” As she placed the phone to her ear she met Mary’s eyes. “Don’t you ever doubt your instincts, Mary.”

Mary felt a ripple of strength carry through her as Suzie’s determined tone reached her ears. With her confidence bolstered, she nodded.

As Suzie shared the information with Jason, her tone shifted.

“It does sound suspicious, doesn’t it? I’m going to put you on speaker phone, so Mary can also hear, Jason.” Suzie pressed a button on her phone, then placed it down on the desk between them.

“I do have an alibi for Jen. She was at the grocery store at the time of the murder. She had the receipt to prove it. However, Calvin was not with her. He claimed that he was in his room, alone.” Jason paused, then drew a breath. “Clearly, that is not a solid alibi. Now that I know that Nellie had been threatening them, that does change things quite a bit. I appreciate you sharing that information with me.”

“I don’t quite understand what Nellie was threatening them about, though.” Suzie shook her head. “What did she have on them?”

“I can probably explain that.” Cathy stepped into the front hallway from the living room. “I’ve been looking into the app that Calvin and Jen made videos for. They’re insanely popular on the app. But the app has strict rules about everyone in the video giving permission to be filmed. There’s a series of videos on the app and site with the chefs they are reviewing. They posted videos with Garrison in them, and from what I can tell they didn’t have his permission. If Garrison or Nellie came forward and complained, it not only opens Jen and Calvin up for legal troubles, but it would get them banned from the app.”

“They killed her because of that?” Mary’s eyes widened.
